Can Shopify accept Bitcoin?
Yes. Shopify describes cryptocurrency as an additional payment method and lists several external providers that support Bitcoin. BTCPay Server also documents a Shopify flow using a custom app and a custom manual payment method.
For merchants, the important question is not only whether Bitcoin is possible, but how the payment infrastructure is operated: Who controls the funds? Who keeps the integration current? How are unpaid, partially paid or expired orders handled? And who helps when Shopify or BTCPay changes technically?
NetPayCrypto is not a general crypto payment processor and does not hold customer funds. The current standard service focuses on Bitcoin on-chain payments connected to the merchant's own wallet. Lightning requires an individual written agreement and a merchant-controlled connection; automatic euro settlement is not included.
A Shopify crypto provider or managed BTCPay?
Shopify supports various external cryptocurrency providers. NetPayCrypto takes a different approach: your store is connected to BTCPay infrastructure that is configured and continuously managed for your business. Wallet control remains with the merchant.
| Criterion | NetPayCrypto + BTCPay | External crypto provider |
|---|---|---|
| Technical model | Managed, self-hosted BTCPay infrastructure | Payment service operated by the respective provider |
| Wallet control | Merchant's own wallet; NetPayCrypto never needs the seed phrase | Depends on the provider and settlement model |
| Supported assets | Currently Bitcoin on-chain | Bitcoin, stablecoins or other assets depending on the provider |
| Fiat settlement | Not currently included | Available from some providers |
| Operation and maintenance | Monitoring, controlled updates and technical support | Depends on the provider |
How the Shopify Bitcoin integration works
The officially documented BTCPay flow connects a Shopify app to BTCPay Server and creates a custom manual payment method in Shopify. NetPayCrypto handles the technical implementation and verifies the complete flow before launch.
- Review the store and requirements. We clarify the Shopify plan, store configuration, existing payment methods and customisations.
- Connect the BTCPay store and wallet. A logically separated BTCPay store is created for the merchant and connected to their own wallet infrastructure.
- Configure the Shopify app. The required app is configured, connected to BTCPay and distributed for the specific Shopify store.
- Enable Bitcoin as a payment method. Shopify displays the custom payment method at checkout, and the subsequent payment flow opens the BTCPay invoice.
- Test end to end. We test the order, redirection, Bitcoin invoice, payment detection, return flow and order status.
- Operate the service. After launch, we provide monitoring, controlled maintenance, backups and technical support.

How much does it cost to accept Bitcoin on Shopify?
NetPayCrypto's standard setup costs 99 EUR as a one-time fee. The ongoing managed service starts at 29 EUR per month and increases in tiers according to monthly Bitcoin on-chain payment volume. NetPayCrypto does not charge a percentage transaction fee.
Bitcoin network fees and fees charged by wallet, exchange or Shopify services may still apply. Shopify notes that third-party transaction fees may apply to external payment gateways depending on the Shopify plan. The BTCPay-documented flow uses a custom manual payment method, and Shopify separately describes manual payment methods as not being subject to third-party transaction fees. The current Shopify terms and the store's exact configuration remain decisive.
Current service scope and limitations
- Lightning: Bitcoin On-Chain is the standard service. Lightning can be added only by individual written agreement, using a merchant-controlled node or Lightning connection and after documented pre-live acceptance.
- No automatic fiat settlement: NetPayCrypto does not currently convert payments to euros automatically.
- No custody: NetPayCrypto does not hold merchant funds and never needs the seed phrase.
- Refunds: The refund process is reviewed and configured before launch; cryptocurrency payments follow different procedures from traditional card payments.
- Legal and tax matters: Merchants should clarify the legal and tax treatment for their business with qualified advisers.

How long does setup take?
Standard integrations can often be completed within a few hours. The actual time depends on the Shopify configuration, access permissions, app approvals and existing customisations.
